September 16 was POW/MIA Recognition Day. In 2007 my father’s remains were finally discovered, but more than 1,500 Americans from the Vietnam War are still unaccounted for. I was privileged to share my story of why I rode 1,200 miles through the jungles of southeast Asia in search of my father’s crash site. Hearing about the 1,200-mile ride through those jungles really stayed with me, especially since my uncle came home from Vietnam but never spoke about it. After he died, we found letters from a friend still listed as missing, and it made the phrase keeping faith with the missing feel like something families live daily. Cindy’s shift from silence to advocacy sounds familiar; sometimes speaking up is the only way forward.
