Rebecca Rusch on Concussions + the Real Toll They Take - Consummate Athlete Podcast

"For those of us who are used to pushing through physical pain, the pain of a brain injury is a completely different story. It’s not about gritting your teeth and getting to the finish line; it’s about patience, rest, and finding the right kind of help."

- Rebecca Rusch on the Consummate Athlete Podcast

I had the chance to sit down with the Consummate Athlete Podcast to dive deep into my journey with concussions and my new limited series podcast, Brain Storm.

This series is so much more than just my story—it’s about shedding light on the invisible injuries that so many athletes, and people in general, are facing. Concussions are often labeled as ‘mild’ and brushed aside, but my own experience has shown me just how big of an impact they can have. I spent nearly three years navigating the rocky road of concussion recovery, and trust me, it was the toughest race of my life—one without a clear finish line.

In this episode, we talk about the crash that set all this in motion, the struggle to find the right care, and the new routines I’ve had to embrace—like meditation, breathing exercises, and finding joy in small moments just walking my dogs. This journey has been about re-learning how to be my own best advocate, and Brainstorm is my way of paying that forward. I hope you’ll tune in, find resources, and feel less alone. Because this is an injury that’s invisible, but it doesn’t have to be silent. Check out the full series on the Feisty Women's Performance Podcast feed and let’s keep the conversation going. Be good to yourself—always. Listen to the Consummate Athlete Podcast below

Your quote really captures what sets concussion recovery apart from physical injuries—the patience piece is so underappreciated. I've been looking for resources on brain injury rehab for endurance athletes https://stl-viewer.org
