Winter Training and New Year’s Eve

Skiing Gladiator Peak

I’ve gotten a bunch of questions lately about how I train for bike racing in the winter.  Well, here is a little taste.  I hike for hours uphill in the backcountry, then ski down and on the other days, I skate ski on the 100km of groomed trails here.  I do most of my interval workouts on the skate skis and long, slow distance on the backcountry gear.  I still spin a couple of hours a week on the bike just to keep up with my TV watching and to keep the muscle memory for cycling.  I spend most of the trainer time on pedal drills and recovery riding.  I show my face in the gym in the winter as well to balance out my strength after being hunched over the bike for a season.

For the next 4 days, I’m headed into Bench yurt with Greg and a bunch of friends to take advantage of the 10 inches of new snow and ring in the New Year.  It’s about a 4 hour hike in with all the gear and food, then we are stationed smack in the middle of the Sawtooth Mountains with no phone, running water or bike trainers.  It’ll be some really good long days with deep powder.  I’m also trying out my new AT ski set up that Greg got me for Christmas!

Happy New Year!

P.S.- These photos are just a couple of reasons why I live where I do.
